Artist Profile — Tom J Simpson

Tom J Simpson is a painter living on Bunurong country / Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.

Tom’s coastal surroundings are woven into his work, whether through abstract or figurative expression. He approaches his practice with a deep sense of flow that helps him to connect to others: ”I am drawn to the interaction of colour and texture that resonates, much like the feeling of listening to a beautiful song. In the same way, art has the ability to cut through the intellect of the mind and into a place reserved for beauty and creativity. It’s this experience of expression and connection that keeps drawing me back to the wonder of painting.”

About ‘Of The Field’

“Of the Field’ is a collection of oil paintings that originate from a mental visualisation that leads to a deep sense of peace.

In preparation for each of these works, I’d take time to sit still and breathe until I could mentally step into that place of the field and feel at peace. That’s a very real feeling, and these works are created from that state in order to bring an internal moment to life in the expression of the paintings.

There’s an honest acceptance of the way each brush stroke lands and marks the canvas when the process honours the experience over anything else.” - Tom J Simpson
