About ‘Lost Horizons’

“I began painting palm trees in 2015, when I was living in a large, chaotic city. The paintings became a sort of refuge to me; a juxtaposition to the noise and lack of nature surrounding me. I described the paintings as my alter ego; quiet and subdued - I like seeing my personality represented in different ways, on the canvas and in my surroundings. I now live close to nature, surrounded by trees, and yet, my desire to paint palm trees has never changed. They don’t need to be an alter ego anymore—they simply represent me and where I’m from. There is an ethereal quality to nature — these paintings are about capturing that essence. The abiding quality that nature has and at the same time, the fragility of it all. Blurred horizons, subdued colours and a sense of calm are what comes to mind when I think about my work.” - Matilda Walsh
